PPPoE or hotspot: which should your ISP use?
5 min read
Both authenticate users. They suit different customers.
PPPoE
Each subscriber has their own username and password, set on their router. It suits fixed customers at home or in an office. You can suspend, limit and count usage per subscriber.
Hotspot
Users open a browser, land on a login page and enter a voucher or buy a plan. It suits visitors and short stays, where you do not know who will turn up.
How to choose
- Fixed customers at a home or office: PPPoE
- Cafés, malls and plazas: hotspot
- Estates and apartment blocks: PPPoE, one account per unit
- Both in one business: use each where it fits
Many ISPs run both. The important part is that billing and sessions are connected either way. See plans, services and sessions.
